Discover the December Birthstone

What is the December birthstone? The month of December has traditionally had 2 birthstones: turquoise and zircon.

Since 2002 however, tanzanite has been added to the official birthstone list and is now one of 3 December birthstones.

A modern choice, tanzanite offers stunning velvety, rich blue hues perfect for adding that finishing touch.

Tanzanite History

Tanzanite was first discovered in 1967 at the foot on Mount Kilimanjaro, Northern Tanzania.

Originally mistaken for sapphire, gemologists soon realised that this exquisite gem was in fact a variety of the mineral zoisite.

The popularity and namesake of this stone can be attributed to one of the world’s most famous jewellers, Tiffany and Co.

Tiffany and Co made the decision to rename the gemstone tanzanite.

Since then tanzanite has become one of the most popular gemstones amongst jewellery wearers.

Tanzanite Colour

The tanzanite stone ranges in colour from light lavender and pale blue tones to rich velvety blue and vivid violet hues.

Due to its unique ability to change colour , this trichroic gem displays purple and red hues when under incandescent light .

December Birthstone Tanzanite Jewellery

Widely used in all forms of jewellery, tanzanite is best paired with diamond or cubic zirconia to create a sparkling finish.
